PhD

This practice-based PhD is concerned with the use of Rejectamenta (“Things thrown away” - Webster’s 1828 Dictionary) by selected contemporary creators (currently practising designers, artists and craftspeople).

Why This?

The intent of this research is to alter preconceptions about the use of waste materials. It will show (through a variety of examples of contemporary creative practice) that items that initially hold negative value can be transformed, through the creative process, to objects that have positive value.

Title

The creative trail of rejectamenta.

Selected contemporary creators’ use of rejectamenta – an exploration of contexts (location, selection & collation) and outcomes.

Aim

The PhD research aims to investigate how selected contemporary creators find and use rejectamenta in their creative practice.

Objectives

To identify and categorise how a selection of contemporary creators locates, selects, collates and uses rejectamenta - through an exploration of their working methods, practices and visual outcomes.

To identify a creative audit trail for rejectamenta – the tracking of rejectamenta from initial ‘find’ to creative visual outcome.

Alongside, and based upon, the above research findings, to identify and visually explore my own working methods, practices and visual outcomes.

To test the feasibility of proposed principles and guidelines.

Due to complete September 2007.
