This set is a snapshot of my entries to the we love your books exhibitions that I co-curated.
Emma Powell Leicester, UK. no man’s land, 2017. Limited edition. www.rejectamenta.com & Instagram: dremmapowell
Emma is a co-curator of ‘we love your books’, an educator, a book artist and a printmaker. She finds it hard to relax and always has a number of projects on the go! She is hoping that 2018 will be better than 2017… She has exhibited her work throughout the UK and in the USA, Armenia and the UAE.
no man’s land
This petite two-part book records a very recent period of time – one of great upheaval and change. The two books intersect in different ways – it is the viewer's choice how they interact with each other. The sequence of tree images moves, over time, from darkness through to lightness. The original photographs were taken from November 2016 – March 2017. They record a daily walk that had to change after 21 years. The screen printed book reads – "walk in no man's land / the void in-between two lives / dark trees intersect. The Riso printed book reads – "walk in no man's land / the void in-between two lives / light trees intersect.
Media used:
Screen prints and Riso prints scanned and presented as digital prints on Bockingford watercolour paper. Based on a series of photographs.

Emma Powell mock up
Emma Powell; I Draw The Line; 2016 (unfinished)
UK, www.weloveyourbooks.com www.rejectamenta.com
Emma is a co-curator of dot dash 2016 and a founder member of we love your books. She is a book artist, printmaker and lecturer. She loves colour and circles and her books often tackle personal and tricky subjects. Her work can be found online and in a variety of collections.
I Draw The Line is a very personal story turned into code. Only Emma and Melanie know the full story. Certain words have been removed and turned into dashes, dots end sentences and asterisk symbols replace swear words. The text is a combination of letterpress, hand writing and digital manipulation. The colour scheme is bleak and the topic is destructive. Emma vows that her work for the 2017 exhibition (intersect) will try to bring some colour back in to her life.

Emma Powell, Act : Hide
Emma is a co-curator of Ebb and Flow 2015 and a founder member of we love your books. She is a book artist, printmaker and lecturer. She loves colour and circles and her books often tackle personal and tricky subjects. Her work can be found online and in a variety of collections.
Emma’s book was created using wooden letterpress with digital implementation at the final stage. Her words explore the ebb and flow of emotions around the topics of depression, anxiety and fear. It is a physical attempt to make the positives outweigh the negatives though the use of pattern, colour and cropping.

To make a point: broadcast (2013)

Broadcast is a book of secrets hidden within each inside-out page. The viewer can only access snippets of the narrative. The only readable page is the cover. The colours are intentionally jarring to accompany disturbing content.
Media used: cheap neon card, hand-printed text from a digital cutter, digital print.

(S)HE/SH(US)H for wlyb minute exhibition 2012
Created for wlyb exhibition – minute (2012)
(S)HE/SH(US)H is a tiny book about a large secret. Most of the text is intentionally obscured and the black marks initially dominate the pink. The final part of the structure has broken free and the pink text dominates.
crop
For my crop books I experimented with a combination of letterpress and Letraset type. The idea was based on my 2010 year of growing crops on my rented piece of land on an organic farm in Leicestershire. I focused on events from each month – some good and some bad. The cover of the book as also been cropped.

(e)motive - with Melanie Bush
Created for wlyb exhibition – (e)motive (2010)
Myself and Melanie photographed aspects of our (e)motive bookworks to create a joint Magcloud piece. We each worked on the other person's book pages and recreated another book structure. It was really interesting how our work had links despite us working in very different ways.

composted pieces for (e)motive 2010
Created for wlyb exhibition – (e)motive (2010)
I have an emotional response to compost. I love the stuff and I have 11 compost bins in my town garden! I composted piles of identical postcards. When I came to turn the compost heap I found that they had worn away into interesting structures. I left them to dry for a further 6 months and then started photographing them and deciding what to do.

billboard pieces for (e)motive 2010
Created for wlyb exhibition – (e)motive (2010)
These pieces of work are based on a piece of billboard I was given to do something with. I peeled it back and discovered loads of really lovely patterns and colours. I then cut these into circular pieces, layered them and mounted them together. I then added Letraset type based on emotive words.

closure
Created for wlyb exhibition – closure (2009)
The base structure of this bookwork is folded pages from a test print-out of my PhD. The pages are interspersed with recycled papers. These contain words relating to closure and are printed using an Adana letterpress machine and various old fonts. The closure of the 2 rubber bands also acts as a device to keep the book open in its circular shape.

rejectamenta
Created for wlyb exhibition – re: (2008)
A chance find of hundreds of defunct photocopy cards in a University skip led to the creation of 2 circular structures. The colours and patterns are created from the initial printing of the photocopy cards that had extended onto the edges. En masse these tiny bits of print make a distinctive pattern.

rejectamenta receipts
Created for wlyb exhibition – ABC (2007)
These 4 small circular, folded books were created using the cyanotype process. Found objects/ephemera were photocopied and then this artwork was placed on the coated paper in the sun and exposed. The books are held in a circular wooden box that once contained vegan chocolates!
